Sunrise Block Island

Block Island's agricultural past is still on display in protected spaces around the island. Everywhere else, developers are tripping over themselves to cut down, level out, and build up. How people love their "Private. Keep Out!" signs...

North Light

This granite lighthouse sits out at the very northern end of Block Island, Rhode Island. The sand and sea shift ceaselessly from year to year in the form of riptides and eroding coastlines. But this bad boy isn't going anywhere.

The rooftops of this lovely French town tell the story of beautifully imperfect building over the centuries. No straight lines, but lots of passion.

Castle

This Loire Valley castle proves that the French are uninterested in straight lines and pragmatism. Everything curves, swerves, and soars. Beauty is an end, not a means to an end.

Loches

Loches is a thoroughly medieval village in the Loire. This picture overlooking the town was taken from atop a castle (which goes to show that even in the middle ages, the key to real estate was location).
